![]() | It may be possible to arrange for Sky Lincs to come along to a troop meeting to talk about Parascending. |
Try it Day - Scout age Experience the sport with a skilled qualified pilot. Dependant on your weight (under 45 kg) using either a square parachute and 200+m of towline or else a paraglider flight towed from our Wesselman winch, reach heights up to 1,000ft or for those over 45 kg a controlled solo flight on a round canopy.
Parascending skills courses Explorer Scout badge weekends (training to BHPA club pilot level) You will be given training in landing roll techniques and canopy control on the ground. Using a round canopy and a short tow line (approx 110m) you may have up to twelve flights, some controlled by the landrover driver. If your landing rolls are good you will be able to release yourself from the towline and land on your own. Then you can learn how to turn the canopy and land on a target.
Ab-initio Wing training Wing (square) canopy training in the club environment After an intensive training session in canopy control techniques you will fly a square canopy on your own, at about 500+ feet. You may progress from this to regular flying. After joining the BHPA (British Hang gliding and Paragliding Association) you will be able to follow the progressive Pilot rating scheme, train for accuracy or X-country flights and develop your paragliding skills.
We do provide tow conversion training for CP qualified paraglider pilots using our Wesselman Winch. Details can be obtained from the CFI Ann Underwood.
A parachute requires a minimum weight in the harness to fly in a stable manner. We have set this limit at 45 kgs although in some conditions we may relax this slightly. Pilots who are less than 45 kgs will be offered 2-up flights with a qualified pilot. We host an annual event - Sky High - over the second weekend in July. The camp provides various activities including one parascending flight and by the end of the camp participants will have covered aspects of a basic aviation skills badge. Detailed information is available from the Sky High page on this website.
As Sky Lincs is an Active Support Team within the Scout Association, all training is done by qualified instructors on a voluntary basis, the costs are kept as low as possible.
Everyone who flies with us regularly must be an Associate member of the Scout Association. All members of the Scout Association over 18 are required to have completed a CRB check (we are working with young people on the airfield.
It is possible to be a day member of BHPA for introductory training but everyone MUST join BHPA (British Hang-gliding and Paragliding Association) see www.bhpa.co.uk for details.
Being a non-commercial venture, it is our aim to get as many people flying as possible for the least cost. Please enquire on costs to Ann Underwood (Chief Flying Instructor)
The training programme consists of a series of easy steps, which enables students to progress at their own pace.
All participants first receive ground training that includes Parachute Landing Falls (PLF,)an introduction to the equipment, launch, collapse and field packing the canopy. Before each flight the pilot is briefed about what will happen and what must be done.
First flights at Sky lincs are usually on a 'round' canopy with a series of low-level flights up to 60 metres (200 feet) which are controlled by the Tow Unit Driver. The driver ensures that the student is given a gentle introduction to the sensation of towed canopy flight and is then brought lightly to ground, still attached to the towline. Subsquent launches, eventually leading to the student's first 'Self-Release', are then possible. Even higher ascents will enable an experienced Parascender to carry out turns, manoeuvres and target approaches after release.
Later training can continue with conversion to the ‘Ram-Air’ (square) canopy type. Training is also available on higher performance Paragliders which are launched by winch.
All participants must complete the Individual Booking/Registration Form providing personal details.
For those who are under 18 years of age, Parental / Guardian Consent must be obtained, (see Booking/Registration Form).
If the Parascending Club does not receive your signed Booking/Registration Form then you will not be allowed to fly. Scouts must also obtain their Leader’s approval and signature.
If you have any questions please contact us before the day.
